Preparing Your Child for Their First Clinic

A little preparation makes the first session far more enjoyable. Pickleball is gentle on young joints compared with many racket sports, but Bengaluru's weather still calls for some planning. Morning and late-afternoon slots tend to be the most comfortable outdoors, and during the monsoon months indoor courts are often the more reliable choice. Our courts page gives an overview of the kinds of venues players use around the city.

What to bring

  • Court shoes with non-marking soles and good lateral support. Running shoes are built for forward motion and can make side-to-side movement less stable.
  • A water bottle, labelled with your child's name. Short, regular drink breaks matter in warm conditions.
  • Light, breathable clothing and a cap for outdoor sessions.
  • A paddle, if you already own one. Many beginners start on a loaner, so there is no need to buy before trying the sport.

Choosing a first paddle

When the time comes to buy, lighter paddles are usually easier for younger players to control, and a smaller grip circumference suits smaller hands. A paddle that is too heavy can tire the wrist and encourage poor technique. Our paddle guide explains weight, grip size and core materials in more detail, which helps parents avoid buying something a child will quickly outgrow or struggle with.

Supporting progress at home

Between sessions, simple games help skills stick: soft dinking against a wall, catching and tossing to build hand-eye coordination, or rallying gently over a low household line. Keep it playful rather than drilled. Children who enjoy the sport tend to practise naturally, and improvement follows.

It also helps to watch the game together. Seeing adult players at community events shows children how rallies develop at the kitchen line and how players call scores and respect opponents, lessons that reinforce what they learn on court.

If your child has any medical condition, asthma or a recent injury, let the coach know before the session and check with your doctor if you are unsure whether the activity is suitable.
