Choosing an Air Mattress for Tournament Trips and Visiting Players
Pickleball has a way of filling the spare room. A friend flies in for a weekend round robin, a doubles partner stays over before an early league match, or you head out of Bengaluru for a tournament and camp near the venue to save on hotels. In each case a good air mattress decides whether you wake up ready to play or nursing a stiff back. Here is what to look for.
Match the mattress to the job
- Guest beds at home: A raised, double-height mattress with a built-in electric pump is the most comfortable choice. It sits closer to the height of a normal bed, so it is easier to get in and out of, which helps tired legs after a long session.
- Camping trips: A lower-profile mattress or self-inflating pad is lighter, packs smaller and copes better with uneven ground. Look for a rechargeable or foot pump, since tent sites rarely have power points.
- Shared use: A queen size suits couples. A single gives a solo player more floor space for kit bags and paddles.
Features worth paying attention to
- Internal structure: Coil or chamber construction keeps the surface flatter and reduces the sagging that can leave you rolling towards the middle.
- Material thickness: Thicker PVC or reinforced TPU resists punctures and lasts longer. Sharp floor edges and tent pegs are common culprits.
- Flocked top: A soft, velvety top stops sheets from sliding about and feels less clammy in humid weather.
- Repair kit: Small patches are cheap insurance. Keep them packed with the mattress.
Sleeping well before a match
New mattresses stretch at first, so inflate one a day early and top it up before bed. Bengaluru nights can feel cooler than the days, and air loses volume as it cools, so slight softening overnight is normal and does not always mean a leak. Put a blanket or thin foam layer under the sheet. It adds insulation and comfort. Keep the mattress off rough floors with a mat or rug.
Rest is part of performance. A guest who sleeps properly will move better at the kitchen line the next morning. If you are hosting players for an upcoming tournament, check the events page for what is coming up, and point visitors to our courts guide so they know where to play once they have recovered from the journey.
