Playing Through Bengaluru's Monsoon Months

Bengaluru's weather is mild for much of the year, but the southwest monsoon and the later northeast monsoon bring sudden afternoon and evening showers that can turn an outdoor court slick within minutes. Knowing how wet conditions affect play helps everyone make sensible decisions before a cancellation notice even goes out.

Why wet courts are a real hazard

Most outdoor pickleball surfaces are acrylic-coated concrete or asphalt. When damp, these coatings lose much of their grip, and the quick lateral steps and sudden stops pickleball demands make slips more likely. Painted lines and the kitchen line become especially slippery. Wet balls also skid and bounce low, which changes the game and can strain wrists and shoulders as players reach awkwardly. Even after the rain stops, standing water and puddles near the net or baselines can linger, so a court that looks dry from a distance may still be unsafe.

Lightning comes first

A widely followed safety guideline is to leave the court as soon as thunder is heard and to wait around 30 minutes after the last thunder before returning. Open courts offer no shelter, and metal net posts and fencing are not places to wait out a storm. If a session is underway and a storm rolls in, stop play immediately rather than finishing the game.

Practical tips for rainy-season play

  • Check the forecast and radar before travelling, as Bengaluru traffic can worsen sharply in heavy rain.
  • Carry a towel and a spare grip or overgrip; damp handles twist easily in the hand.
  • Pack a small squeegee or towel to help clear light surface water if the venue allows it.
  • Wear court shoes with good tread and avoid worn soles during the wet months.
  • Keep an outdoor-rated ball in your bag, but accept that no ball plays well on a soaked surface.

Indoor alternatives

When outdoor play is rained out, covered or indoor courts can keep your routine going. Our courts page and venues listing are good starting points for finding options, though availability and booking rules vary, so confirm directly with each venue. For league fixtures affected by weather, keep an eye on the leagues page for revised schedules.
