Getting Started and Staying Involved

Whether you picked up a paddle last week or have been playing for years, the easiest way to become part of the community is simply to show up and play. Pickleball is famously welcoming to newcomers: the court is small, the underhand serve is easy to learn, and most players are happy to explain the kitchen rule or the two-bounce rule between points. If you are new, start by finding a convenient location on our courts page and look for open or social sessions, where players rotate partners and games are short.

What to bring to your first session

  • A paddle: many groups have spares to borrow, but if you plan to buy one, our paddle guide explains weight, grip size and core materials in plain terms.
  • Court shoes: non-marking shoes with good lateral support help prevent ankle rolls. Running shoes are not built for quick sideways movement.
  • Water and sun protection: Bengaluru's weather is mild compared with much of India, but outdoor courts can still get hot by mid-morning, so early or evening slots are often more comfortable.

Moving from casual play to regular games

Once you are comfortable with scoring and basic shots, joining a league gives structure to your progress. Playing regularly against people of a similar level builds consistency, especially in the soft game at the net, which is where most rallies are won. Have a look at the leagues listing for formats and skill levels, and check the details of any session before you travel, as timings and venues can change.

Etiquette that keeps games friendly

Call the score clearly before each serve, make line calls honestly on your own side, and give the benefit of the doubt when a ball is too close to call. When courts are busy, use the paddle-stacking or queue system the group follows and rotate off after your game. These small habits make sessions run smoothly and keep new players coming back, which is what helps a local pickleball scene grow.
