Getting Started with Pickleball in Bengaluru

If you are new to the game, the easiest first step is simply turning up to an open play session. Pickleball is played on a court roughly a third the size of a tennis court, with a low net, a solid paddle and a perforated plastic ball, so most people can rally within their first hour. Doubles is the most common format at community sessions, which means you will be paired with others and pick up the rules naturally as you play.

What to bring

  • Court shoes: non-marking shoes with good lateral support matter more than any paddle. Running shoes are built for forward motion and can make side-to-side movement awkward.
  • Water and sun protection: outdoor courts in Bengaluru can be warm even outside the hottest months, so early morning and evening sessions are often the most comfortable.
  • A paddle, if you have one: many groups have spares for beginners. Before buying, read our paddle guide to understand weight, grip size and surface materials.

Learning the basics quickly

Three ideas will help you more than anything else. First, the serve is underhand and diagonal, and it must land beyond the non-volley zone. Second, the two-bounce rule means the serve and the return must each bounce once before anyone volleys. Third, the non-volley zone, often called the kitchen, is the area next to the net where you cannot hit the ball out of the air. Once these feel familiar, you can start working on soft dinks and patient rallies, which are at the heart of good doubles play.

Finding your level

After a few weeks of casual games, many players look for more structured competition. Our leagues group players of similar ability so matches stay enjoyable and challenging, and they are a good way to meet regular partners. To see where games take place across the city, browse the courts page and check timings with the venue before you travel, since availability can change with bookings and weather.
