Getting Started with Pickleball in Bengaluru
If you are new to pickleball, the easiest first step is simply to turn up and watch a session. Most community play in Bengaluru runs in the cooler early mornings and evenings, when the heat is easier to manage and courts are busiest. Watching a few rallies helps you pick up the flow of doubles play, the two-bounce rule and the role of the non-volley zone, often called the kitchen, before you step on court yourself.
What to bring to your first session
- Court shoes: Non-marking shoes with good lateral support matter more than running shoes, which can roll on quick sideways movements.
- Water and a towel: Bengaluru's weather is milder than much of India, but games are fast and hydration still counts, especially in the dry months.
- A paddle, if you have one: Many groups have spare paddles for beginners, so there is no need to buy straight away. When you are ready, our paddle guide explains weight, grip size and core materials.
Learning the basics quickly
Pickleball is known for being easy to start and rewarding to improve at. Focus first on a consistent underhand serve and a soft, controlled return. Many new players try to hit hard from the start, but points at every level are usually won by patience at the kitchen line and well-placed dinks rather than power. Playing with a mix of partners also helps, because you will see different styles and learn faster.
Finding regular games
Once you feel comfortable, look for a regular slot that fits your week. Playing at the same time and place helps you get to know other players and makes it easier to find partners of a similar level. You can browse our courts page for places to play, and when you want a bit more structure and friendly competition, the leagues section explains how organised play works. Always check timings and availability before travelling, as schedules can change with the season and venue bookings.
