Getting Started with Pickleball in Bengaluru: Practical Tips

Pickleball rewards consistency more than raw power, which is why so many newcomers in Bengaluru pick it up quickly. If you are planning your first few weeks on court, a little preparation goes a long way toward making the sessions enjoyable and injury-free.

Choose your playing times wisely

Bengaluru's climate is milder than much of India, but afternoons can still get warm, and the monsoon months bring sudden showers that make outdoor surfaces slippery. Early mornings and evenings tend to be the most comfortable for outdoor play. If you prefer a predictable schedule regardless of the weather, look for covered or indoor facilities. Our courts page is a good place to start comparing options.

Pick equipment that suits a beginner

You do not need an expensive paddle to begin. A mid-weight paddle with a comfortable grip size usually offers a good balance of control and power while you learn. Pay attention to grip circumference, because a handle that is too thick or thin can strain the wrist and forearm. Outdoor balls are harder and have smaller holes than indoor balls, so use the type suited to your surface. For a deeper look at materials, weights and shapes, read our paddle guide.

Footwear and warm-ups

Court shoes with good lateral support matter more than many players expect. Running shoes are built for forward motion and can leave ankles vulnerable during quick side-to-side movement at the kitchen line. Spend five to ten minutes warming up with light movement, shoulder rotations and gentle dinking rallies before playing competitive points.

Learn the fundamentals early

  • The two-bounce rule: the serve and the return must each bounce once before volleys are allowed.
  • The non-volley zone: you cannot volley while standing in the kitchen, the area near the net.
  • Scoring: in traditional doubles scoring, only the serving side wins points, and the score is called as three numbers.

Once you are comfortable with rallies and scoring, social play and organised formats help you improve faster. Browse our leagues to find a level that matches your game and meet other players across the city.
