Filming and Photographing Your Pickleball Games
Many players in Bengaluru are discovering that a camera can be one of the most useful training tools they own. An entry-level DSLR such as Canon's EOS Rebel T3i class of cameras, or even a modern phone, lets you capture rallies, study your footwork and share the energy of community sessions. A few practical habits make the footage far more useful.
Choosing the right angle
For analysing technique, set the camera behind the baseline at roughly head height, centred on the court. This view shows your positioning, how quickly you move up to the kitchen line and whether you and your partner leave gaps in the middle. A side-on angle near the net post is better for checking paddle face, wrist control on dinks and the timing of your third-shot drop.
Settings for fast action
Pickleball moves quickly, so a fast shutter speed helps freeze the ball and paddle in still photos. Continuous autofocus and burst mode improve your chances of catching the exact moment of contact. Indoor courts and evening sessions under floodlights can be dim, so a lens with a wide aperture is a real advantage over a basic kit zoom. For video, a steady tripod matters more than any setting.
Etiquette on shared courts
- Ask the other players before recording, especially in open play.
- Keep tripods and bags well clear of the playing area and walkways.
- Avoid flash during play, as it can distract players mid-rally.
- Respect any photography rules set by the venue.
Turning footage into progress
Watch a few games and note recurring patterns: unforced errors, shots hit while moving backwards, or rushed resets. Pick one habit to work on at a time, then compare new footage a few weeks later. Our paddle guide can help if the video reveals grip or equipment issues, and recording league matches through our leagues gives you consistent, competitive footage to learn from.
