Playing Pickleball While You Travel

Many members of our community travel for work or family, and a trip abroad does not have to mean a break from the game. Pickleball has spread widely across the United States, and cities of all sizes, including places like Greensboro in North Carolina, tend to have public parks, recreation centres and clubs where visitors can find a game. A little planning before you leave makes it far easier to step onto a court soon after you arrive.

Finding courts and open play

Start by checking the local parks and recreation department's official website, which usually lists outdoor courts and any indoor sessions at community centres. Many groups run "open play" sessions where players rotate in by placing paddles in a queue, so visitors can join without a fixed partner. Schedules change often, so confirm times close to your visit rather than relying on older listings.

What to pack

  • Your own paddle: it is the one piece of kit you will notice missing. Our paddle guide covers choosing a durable, travel-friendly option.
  • Court shoes: proper non-marking shoes with lateral support matter on hard courts.
  • Weather gear: summers in the American South can be hot and humid, so bring a hat, sunscreen and a water bottle.

Court etiquette abroad

Etiquette is broadly similar everywhere: call the score clearly before serving, make honest line calls on your side, and wait for a rally to finish before crossing behind a court. If you are unsure of local customs, such as how the paddle rotation works, simply ask; regular players are usually happy to explain. Playing at an unfamiliar venue is also a good test of adaptability, since ball types, surfaces and wind conditions can all differ from what you are used to.

Bringing it back home

Travel games are a chance to pick up new drills, strategies and ideas for organising sessions. When you return to Bengaluru, share what you learned with fellow players at our courts, or test your sharpened skills in one of our leagues.
